History of North Richland Hills, Texas: From Farmland to Flourishing City

Early Roots: The Land Before Settlement

Long before modern homes, highways, and shopping centers filled the area, the land that is now North Richland Hills was a part of the vast Texas prairie. Indigenous peoples once traveled through the region, living off the resources of the plains and rivers. The soil was fertile, the grasslands were abundant, and it made for excellent farmland when settlers eventually arrived.

As Tarrant County grew during the 1800s, the land in this part of the county became valuable for agriculture, cattle ranching, and homesteads. Families settled here to farm the rich land and raise livestock, setting the stage for a community built on hard work and resilience.

The Jackson Family and Early Settlement

One of the most notable families in the area’s history is the W.S. “Fate” Jackson family. In the mid-20th century, Jackson owned a large tract of farmland in what is now North Richland Hills. His vision and the decisions he made about dividing and selling his land helped lay the foundation for the city’s future growth.

Jackson recognized that the region’s proximity to Fort Worth made it ideal for residential development, especially as the metro area began to expand. This foresight helped transform the rural landscape into a community that would later become one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Texas.

Formation of North Richland Hills

In 1953, North Richland Hills officially incorporated as a city. At the time, it had a population of only about 500 residents. The name was chosen because the land was situated just north of the Richland Hills area, which was already an established community.

The decision to incorporate came from the need to manage growth and provide services to the increasing number of families moving to the area. Even in its earliest days, NRH had a vision of becoming more than a farming community—it wanted to be a place where families could live, work, and thrive.

Suburban Growth in the 1950s and 1960s

The post-World War II era brought significant change to much of the United States, and North Richland Hills was no exception. As returning veterans looked for places to settle down, suburban communities began to flourish.

NRH saw new subdivisions, schools, and businesses open during this time. Streets were laid, utilities were installed, and the community quickly began to resemble the modern suburb it was destined to become. By the 1960s, the population had grown into the thousands, reflecting the nationwide trend of families moving away from big city centers in search of more space and affordability.

The Influence of Transportation

A key factor in North Richland Hills’ growth has always been its location and accessibility. Situated along major roadways, the city offered residents easy commutes to Fort Worth, Dallas, and other parts of the Metroplex.

• Highway 121 and Loop 820 provided convenient access.

• Later developments like State Highway 183 and 26 made the city even more connected.

• Today, the addition of the TEXRail commuter line continues that tradition, linking NRH to downtown Fort Worth and DFW International Airport.

Transportation has always been the lifeline that helped turn North Richland Hills from farmland into a hub for suburban living.

Population Boom and Economic Expansion

The 1970s through the 1990s marked decades of rapid expansion. Families were drawn to NRH for its combination of affordability, safety, and proximity to jobs in Fort Worth and Dallas.

During this time:

• Schools in the Birdville Independent School District expanded to serve the growing student population.

• Parks and recreation areas were developed to improve residents’ quality of life.

• Businesses and shopping centers began to open, reducing the need for locals to travel outside the city for everyday needs.

By the end of the 20th century, North Richland Hills was no longer a small town—it had grown into a major suburban community with tens of thousands of residents.
